Sexy Librarian Tote bag

I recently started grad school with the intention of getting a Master's in Library and Information Science. So I needed a new tote for my books. I picked up the bag and the pattern from Sublime Stitching. It turned out really cute, I think.

And just to make it extra sassy there is a Reform School Girl hiding out on the side of the bag! Click on the photos to make them big.

I plan to add a few more embellishments but that's going to have to wait until the winter break.

I've been allll about the embroidery lately. I bought these pattern-stamped pillow cases ages and ages ago and recently picked them up and finished them. This is a detail of the busiest part of the pattern.

They are on the guest pillows! And they are an identical pair. I don't even know for sure if these photos are of the different cases. Heh.

Baking Magnets

I was flipping through an old Martha Stewart magazine and noticed these little cut-out baking charts. So I just happened to have a roll of magnet paper. It has sticker on one side, magnet on the other. I cut these out of the magazine, pressed them onto the magnet sticky paper and cut out the magnet. Now they are on the fridge where they are easily viewed. I am thinking of putting a coating of Mod Podge on them to protect them from the elements but I haven't had any issues so far.

Baking pan substitutions! Who doesn't need that?

Cross Stitch From Hell's North Pole

Recently I finished an epic counted cross stitch project. Before you think I'm crazy lemme explain! My mom loved Christmas. And she loved all Christmas things that were over the top and tacky. So I made this tree skirt with the idea that I would probably give it to her. She's been dead for a year and a half so that tells you how many years this project has been in the works! So now, about five years after I started the stupid project I'm done! Whoooooo!

This project was epic! I'd worked on it during the holidays for the last few years but last fall I decided to just work on it until I was done. I've been working on it so diligently since then that I don't even know what to do when I'm sitting around watching a TV show at night. I can't do just one thing!

So, yeah, it's bananas. I haven't cut it up to be a tree skirt yet because Dale feels it should be a runner instead--there are instructions on how to make it either of those things. Dale thinks it should be prominently displayed and not have the risk of getting sap on it and ruining it. He's actually quite impressed with it (I'm guessing he's just humoring me because he knows how much time I spent on this silly thing).

Anyway, no more cross stitch for me! And no more Christmas themed crap!

Hand-Painted Pet Bowls

Vintage Bead Bracelet

I made this bracelet! I took apart an old necklace because I really liked the beads but it was nothing I would ever wear. I strung the beads on wire posts and ended up with this!

It's soft and girly but not too dainty. I like it! I know nothing about jewelry making or design so this was very by the seat of my pants and I'm happy with it. The beads came from some costume jewelry I have that belonged to my grandmothers. I honestly don't know whose necklace these beads came from--I'd guess my great grandmother Mamie but I did get a bunch from my grandma Agatha, too, so I'm not entirely sure!

I painted this about a million years ago--when I was still a teen, I think. Some sometime in the 80s! My mom used to do tons of painted ceramic crap so I gave it a whirl. I just put these in a box to give to charity so I wanted to make sure I had a little photo of the set before it's gone.

Floral Lights/Pussy Willow Lights

So a couple of weeks before Christmas I was at the flower shop down the block and saw these adorable lights! I liked them but they were like $40 and I thought that was absurd because, as always, my first thought is: Eh, I could do that.

Monty, as always, was eager to help!

I pulled together my supplies: string of pearl lights (thanks, Target), some floral wire, floral tape and floral stems (Michael's).

From there I just sort of free formed it. I used the stems to wrap the light cord around and the wire to tightly secure the wire to the stem. Then I wrapped the whole thing in floral tape. And I did this repeatedly till I got low on lights. Then I just wrapped the base.

They aren't as nice as the store-bought ones but considering I slapped it together with about $10 in supplies while sitting in front of the TV, I'm pretty okay with how it worked out!

I actually think they look prettier in person--they have a nice glow about them and do not dominate the room the way they do this photo.

So I picked up an unused vintage gravel art kit on etsy.com and I whipped it up with a quickness! Gravel art was popular on the heels of paint-by-number kits. Basically, the kit has an outline, you fill in the glue and sprinkle on the "gravel" or beads or whatever. Then you let it dry and shake off the excess.

I like this one. I'm not sure where I'm going to put it.

Dark Red Bridesmaid Cards & Flower Girl

I wish I had taken better pics of these! This was the only one I had and I don't think the color turned out great. But the cards themselves turned out really cute, I think. One flower girl card in white--I added a ribbon at the waist because the flower girl cards don't look as good without one, in my opinion. The cards are in deep red with a white ribbon at the waist. Additionally, the bride requested a "dip" at the neckline. I'd never done it on the strapless silhouette and I wasn't sure how it was going to look (because of the way I wrap the fabric around those types of dresses I wasn't sure it would show up). BUT! It worked and is subtle but charming, if I do say so myself!

I'm also a fan of the dark red fabric. This was actually leftover from a customer's wedding. She ordered cards made with her own fabric and she sent me a bunch of it--so much that I told her I had a ton to ship back to her but she told me to keep it! So that's the story behind this lovely fabric. It really is beautiful and rich. I like it.

I made two marble magnet hair clips using old romance comic books. The one above is called Love (it features five tiny happy couples)...the one below is Loss (it features five lonely ladies)! For some reason these crack me up.

Gift Baskets Galore!

Had a few photos of gift baskets I've made over the years! So here they are...

One Christmas I bought a bunch of baskets at thrift stores and stacked them with mugs and hot cocoa mix! I made cocoa cones with a coworker for tons of people! We put cocoa mix into a pastry bag and then put cocoa toppings on top--marshmallows, sprinkles, etc. Very cute. Tied pastry bag with a bow and voila! Easy-peasey! Great, inexpensive gift for the cocoa lover on your list!

This is a pizza kit for a young couple that was getting married in 2002 (totally divorced now--seriously it's okay to go cheap on the gift when the the couple is very young). Anyway, they were registered for portions of the gift so I started to work a theme. Pizza pan, pizza slicer, measuring cup, Italian cookbook, pizza sauce and seasoning and even flour--everything to make the pizza recipe included in the measuring cup! Best part? It wasn't too pricey and it got the "oohs" and "ahhs" I live for at the showers! Hee!

This gift basket was for a grown-up couple (also now divorced--seriously, don't beat yourself up about these non-monetary wedding gifts!) that loved to entertain. So I gave them a galvanized bucket (because they could fill it with ice and use it for parties in the backyard), stuffed with margarita-themed goodies. Plastic glasses for outdoor entertaining (super cute margarita style), margarita mix, premium tequila, a book of margarita recipes, a book filled with romantic quotes and some neutral napkins and place mats. I really thought this one was adorable.

Another Italian meal theme! The box had a registry item and on top was a colander, wooden spoons, premium pasta and sauce (from a boutique grocer), and a oil bottle. Loved it!

This is not my finest piece. But it worked for a spell. It was an ugly dark wood mail organizer that I bought at Goodwill. I painted it my light kitchen blue and then printed our names on big ol' shrinky dink pages that shrunk up and became labels for the different pockets.

Kind of a craft failure but I learned a lot.

I got an elaborate pumpkin/Halloweend stencil of Chewbacca--who happens to look a bit like Bigfoot in this photo--and used a bleach pen to trace it in and fade out the red dye of the t-shirt. I gave this to my stepbrother for X-mas a couple of years back. It was fun to make.

Recently, I had a bride tell me she was having a traditional Indian ceremony and would not be using traditional bridesmaids' dresses but she would have girlfriends standing up with her wearing traditional saris. So I made these orange sari cards at her request. I really enjoyed the challenge but I will likely charge more for these in the future--lots more fabric and cutting than in the simple strapless silhouette cards!

I made this for my mother as a joke. However, it was no joke to craft this felt masterpiece. Hee! It was a serious finger-beating! That said? I love how over the top it is. I seriously LOVE how over the top it is.
